Opinion dismissing case
Case Information
** This challenge was heard alongside, but not generally consolidated with, League of Women Voters of Ohio v. Ohio Redistricting Comm’n and Bennett v. Ohio Redistricting Comm’n **
A state court challenge to the state legislative maps as a partisan gerrymander unlawful under the state constitution.
On Jan. 12, 2022, the state Supreme Court struck the original maps passed by the Ohio Redistricting Commission along partisan lines. The Commission adopted a new plan on Jan. 22, 2022, which was again struck by the state Supreme Court as a partisan gerrymander on Feb. 7, 2022. The Commission adopted a third plan on Feb. 24, 2022, which was again struck by the state Supreme Court as a partisan gerrymander on Mar. 16, 2022. The Commission adopted a fourth plan on Mar. 28, 2022, which was again struck by the state Supreme Court as a partisan gerrymander on Apr. 14, 2022. On May 5, 2022, the Commission “readopted” its third map — the Feb. 24 plan — in light of the federal court ruling in Gonidakis v. Ohio Redistricting Comm’n. On May 25, 2022, the state Supreme Court again rejected these plans.
Pursuant to the Gonidakis court order, the 2022 elections were held using the Feb. 24 plans.
The Commission adopted a fifth plan on Sept. 29, 2023, this time by a unanimous vote. On Nov. 27, 2023, the state Supreme Court dismissed challenges to this fifth plan.
