Case Information

A federal court challenge by proponents of a redistricting initiative to the deadline and threshold for signatures for ballot initiatives, in light of COVID-19.

On July 13, 2020, the trial court granted a preliminary injunction, offering the state the option to either put the measure on the ballot, or to reduce the signature threshold by 50% and extend the deadline from July 2 to Aug. 17.  The case was appealed; on Aug. 11, 2020, the U.S. Supreme Court granted a stay of the preliminary injunction pending resolution of the appeal.  On Sept. 1, 2020, the court of appeals acknowledged that the stay meant that the initiative would not be on the 2020 ballot, and remanded for a determination of whether the case was now moot.  On June 10, 2021, the trial court dismissed the case as moot.
