Case Information

A federal court challenge to North Dakota’s state legislative districts, alleging that the maps dilute the voting strength of Native American voters in violation of the Voting Rights Act.

On July 7, 2022, after a statement of interest from the DOJ, the trial court denied the state’s motion to dismiss, and on Apr. 10, 2023, also denied the state’s motion for summary judgment.  A bench trial took place on June 12, 2023.

On Nov. 17, 2023, the trial court struck down the maps for violating section 2 of the VRA.
