Case Information

A federal court challenge to the state legislative districts, alleging that the maps dilute the voting strength of Native American voters in violation of the Voting Rights Act.

On July 7, 2022, after a statement of interest from the DOJ, the trial court denied the state’s motion to dismiss, and on Apr. 10, 2023, also denied the state’s motion for summary judgment.

On Nov. 17, 2023, after a bench trial, the court struck the maps as violations of §2 of the VRA. On Jan. 8, 2024, the court ordered the state to adopt maps presented by plaintiffs.  Both decisions are now on appeal.
