Stone v. Allen (was Thomas and Chandler v. Merrill)

Last Updated Jul 19, 2024
Case No. 2:21-cv-01531 (N.D. Ala.)
Cycle 2020

Case Information

Federal court challenge to Alabama’s state legislative plan as an unjustified predominant use of race, in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment.  On Dec. 6, 2023, plaintiffs filed an amended complaint instead alleging a violation of the Voting Rights Act with respect to the state Senate map alone.

On Feb. 13, 2024, the court largely denied a motion to dismiss, except that the court dismissed claims against the state Senate chair of the legislative committee on grounds of legislative immunity.
