Case Information
Federal court challenge to Alabama’s state legislative plan as an unjustified predominant use of race, in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment. On Dec. 6, 2023, plaintiffs filed an amended complaint instead alleging a violation of the Voting Rights Act with respect to the state Senate map alone.
On Sept. 24, 2024, the court denied summary judgment to the state. On Aug. 22, 2025, after a bench trial, the court struck the state Senate maps, finding that the plan diluted Black votes in the Montgomery area in violation of the VRA.
